Analysis of the Movie Poster

February 21, 2008

Because of the cast shadow of the box, the key light comes from the left and the fill light comes from the left. Because of the attached shadow of the key ring of the heart, it is slow fall off and high key light.

The poster has red ribbons as graphical vectors. They are vertical and horizontal. It was well-balanced. The names of the casts and the title are the horizontal graphical vector. The red key ring is the vertical graphical vector. The poster consist of the vertical and horizontal lines, so it is so beautiful geometrically.

Signifiers are the title, the names of the casts, the white box, the red ribbon, the red key ring of the heart. They are analogical codes. The white box and the red ribbon make up the meaning of “present”. It is denotation or an index sign. The white means snow. It is connotation. The present and the snow make up the meaning of Christmas. The red heart key ring and the present make up the meaning of love. It suggests that the movie has the love and Chrstmas story. It is metonymy.

I think this poster was really successful because the design of the poster was really simple and beautiful, and it has a lot of meanings such as connotation and metonymy. The combination of the colors and the objects was really effective to expree the concept of the love story on Christmas.

  1. You’re right, this cover design was very simple and almost abstract. It definitely makes one think about love, accomplishing getting the genre across in a split-second. I like your interpretation of the colors and their meanings, I don’t know if I would have even thought of that. The list of the cast almost acts as a ‘to’ or ‘from’ card attached to the gift. Great discussion and nice album cover choice.

  2. I liked your analysis in class on this poster. I hadn’t thought about the white representing snow. I also think that the heart attached to the present shows how in the movie, love is given almost like a Christmas present.

  3. The color choice on this poster make it a very powerful image. I haven’t seen the movie, but the poster evokes feelings of Valentine’s Day. Is this completely far off?

Thank you for your comment. I agree with that the list of the cast a card attached to the gift. I did not get this idea until you mentioned it. Thank you so much.

Thank you for your comment. The colors were very simple, but it has powerful image. The movie was about the omnibus love stories in Christmas. I love this movie, so you should watch it.

  5. I like your post. I think you did an excellent job explaining the meaning in this movie cover. I think that there may not be a fill light in this photo. I think there may just be the key light/spotlight coming in from the left, and that’s why you see that shadow. I like how you describe your interpretation of the cover at the end. I agree with you. I think it does work because it is beautiful, yet simple.

Thank you for your comment. The movie poster is really beautiful and simple, so I really like this poster. I was wondering the fill light exists or not. If the fill light exists, it might be really weak.
